Tow Law

Match Report

It all started oh so well. Two goals to the good and in truth, the Lawyers were completely outplayed for the opening half hour, it was a question of damage limitation. The away side couldn't get to grips with the pace and incisive link up play from midfield to the wings as Town dazzled on the pitch to go with the smart new home kit. The one thing Town were guilty of last season was not putting the opposition to the sword when in cruise control and it happened again as half time approached. Tow Law were non existent as an attacking force but pulled a goal back from out of the blue and as Town lost their way in the second half, the Lawyers punished Billingham for their earlier profligacy. It could of been worse as Michael Gibson missed a sitter and Town could still have won it at the end...... It was that kind of game.....a curates egg of a performance.

Manager Barry Oliver decided to go with an offensive line up. Christopher Dickinson started upfront with Craig Hutchinson and the wing play was provided by Luke Hogan and Daniel Lambert. Jack Connor joined skipper, Stephen Oakley in central defence.

Town soon took command, creating several early chances. A breakaway, orchestrated by Dickinson involved some exquisite play between the forward and his partner, Hutchinson. After a couple of one-two's, Hutchinson shot straight at Robbie Anderson. On twelve minutes, Gary Redman spread the ball to the left for Hogan and he easily beat Joe Gill to tee up Hutchinson but he bundled the ball wide. Oakley headed wide from a Lambert corner and Lambert drilled over from twenty yards as Town continued to search for the opening goal. And it came on twenty six minutes of one way football. Again, Hutchinson was involved from the start as he switched the ball out to the left side for Hogan. The wingers precision cross found Jamie Davis at the back post and his downward header gave DICKINSON the chance to rifle home. Then Lambert turned provider on the right to set up HUTCHINSON and his looped shot nestled nicely into the net. The sucker punch came four minutes later as half time loomed. Dean Thexton evaded the offside trap as Town played a high line and the veteran forward beat the onrushing Robbie Stockburn. The last chance of the half fell for Dickinson but his effort went wide of goal.

Tow Law made two half time substitutions; an indication of Towns dominance for the majority of the opening period. They were forced into a final change shortly after the restart due to an injury near the advertisement boards behind the goal. Whatever was said in the away dressing room, it seemed to have worked. Billingham had shown so much intensity in the first half, they couldn't replicate it as the away side sensed an opportunity to get back on level terms. The equaliser came on sixty five minutes. A cross field ball caught out Gary Redman and it was one of the substitutes, Lee Blades who raced away and coolly placed the ball in the top corner. Rather than gaining three points, Town were holding on for a point and they got an almighty lucky escape on seventy two minutes. Cameron Nichols cross was headed down by Thexton but Gibson blazed over when it looked easier to score.

Oliver made two changes to regain the initiative. Elliott Beddow and Lee Jones came on for Hogan and Hutchinson who were starved of any meaningful service. The final ten minutes belonged to the home side. Dickinson set up Lambert but was off target from twenty yards and the best chance came deep into injury time. Lambert's cross on the right found Jones and his angled header went agonisingly wide of the far post.

Town don't have time to dwell on todays events as they prepare for a tough Tuesday night at The Glebe. Whickham got off to a good start with a comfortable 3.0 victory at Brandon United.
