Ryton Crawcrook Albion 1 - 0 BILLINGHAM TOWN

Town slipped to their third Cup exit of the month as they lost to a last minute penalty at Kingsley Park in front of a poor crowd on a night where the weather deterred all but the most faithful from attending.

Coach James Hunter took charge in the absence of manager Barry Oliver and his assistant Graham Popple. The team showed four changes from the starting line up against Blyth. Mark Hodgson replaced Brad James in goal while Brandon Kirkbride, Elliott Beddow and Joe Kerridge came in for Jake Fenton, Ash Lavan and Luke Hogan.

Conditions largely put paid to any thoughts of a proper football match. The pitch was soaked, which caused the ball to behave erratically and limited Town’s usual passing game.

Town started brightly with long range shots from Kerridge and Beddow. The first good chance came after 12 minutes when a Kris Summers header was tipped wide by the Ryton keeper. The home team did not have their first chance until the 18th minute as a shot was fired over the crossbar.

Half time saw the teams level.

In the first ten minutes after half time Town should have put the game beyond doubt as three good chances were not converted, including one which hit the post and then the bar.

The first save that Mark Hodgson had to make did not happen until the 70th minute as he dived to his left to push away a shot. It was to be almost the only shot on target that Ryton had from open play.

The game drifted towards a penalty shoot out until in the 90th minute Jake Fenton was sent off for two yellow cards in a matter of seconds. Very quickly after Kris Summers was adjudged to have fouled a Ryton player who fell over after taking the ball past him in the penalty area. From the penalty Bellow scored to give the home team the spoils.

It was a disappointing end to a game that Town should have had sewn up. On a miserable evening it was pleasing to see so many diehard Town fans in such a small crowd who braved the elements to follow their team.
